Ricky Martin: Living La Vida Real

It’s been a few hours since former child star and lead singer of the band “Menudo”, Ricky Martin, stated on his website “ I am a fortunate homosexual”. This comes as no surprise to many, as the speculations regarding the Puerto Rican’s singer have been numerous over the many years of his career. Perhaps the reason is not only the fact that the singer is now raising his twin boys, but also the recent interview by Barbara Walters in which she stated:

"In 2000, I pushed Ricky Martin very hard to admit if he was gay or not, and the way he refused to do it made everyone decide that he was. A lot of people say that destroyed his career, and when I think back on it now I feel it was an inappropriate question."
Although there has not been a lack of stars who have recently come out publicly as gay, this will no doubt be news to the hoards of fans of the former teen heart throb. This new addition to the celebrities who now say “ I am gay” is in good company. Most of them not surprisingly, female. Among them Actress Cynthia Nixon of “Sex In The City” fame, Comedian Wanda Sykes, and “Family Ties” star Meredith Baxter.

The one thing that will undoubtedly be a source of media coverage now, will be how others will respond to this “new” revelation. One thing is certain, although many women will be angry or shocked, Ricky Martin will now have a new role to play: the one of role model to many youths in the LGBT community. Mr. Martin is already engaged in helping many young people through his Ricky Martin Foundation.

I think the fact that the signer has chosen to come out now, is a signal of how America is dealing with, and accepting that there are indeed many whose sexual orientation is other than heterosexual. It seems many will now take this news, which was once speculation, and put a new face on it. Questions will now arise as to why now? I can only hope that the media will be fair in its coverage of this news. Personally, being of the same generation as Mr. Martin, I wish he had come out sooner. But as they say...better late than never.
