Why Is Our Government Using Our Money To Fund Discrimination?

In three days the First Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments on The Defense of Marriage Act. (DOMA) the law which denies all legally married couples over 1000 federal marriage benefits. Although the time allotment for hearing oral arguments is usually half an hour, this time it will be extended to an hour. The reason for this is that the 3 panel judge will actually be hearing two cases.

Although President Obama has instructed the Department of justice to stop defending DOMA (which has been found unconstitutional by several judges) it will be defended Paul Clement. Clement is a former solicitor general under former President George W. Bush , whom House Speaker John Boehner hired to defend the unpopular and divisive law. John Boehner has hired Mr. Clement in a contract with a 1.5 million cap as reported by The Washington Blade.

Mr. Boehner last month appointed Robert P. George to the U.S. Commission for International Religious Freedom. Mr. George for those who aren’t aware, is a co-founder of the foremost anti-gay group The National Organization for Marriage. An organization under fire for its racial baiting, and non disclosure of it’s donors, for which the courts have ruled against and released damning documents. It’s former president and founder, Margaret Gallagher-Srivastav, was paid 21,500 by former Republican President George Bush. It was a part of Bush’s 300 million ( yes, 300 million) initiative to “strengthen” marriage. A fact she conveniently failed to disclose . The following is what Mrs. Srivastav had to say :

Did I violate journalistic ethics by not disclosing it?" Gallagher said yesterday. "I don't know. You tell me." She said she would have "been happy to tell anyone who called me" about the contract but that "frankly, it never occurred to me.

So, as we go into the next phase of waiting for equality, will it be politics as usual, or will all of us, gay and straight, say enough to Mr. Boehner and others. Will we keep fighting for what’s right for all Americans, or will we stand by and see discrimination continue to divide us. I hope it’s the former. We need our taxpayers dollars to build a future for our children, our communities, our  Our hard earned money and taxes can be put to better use. It’s time for Mr. Boehner to get out of NOM’s pockets. Don’t you agree?
